I led the development of all main stage content for Hyland's user conference, CommunityLIVE, including this opening keynote from CEO Bill Priemer. To pull together the multimedia agenda — which included hype videos, executive presentations, panel discussions with customers, even a late-night-style talk show complete with live band and interactive games — I collaborated with company leaders, event organizers, videographers, creative agencies and a live production crew.

Helping you innovate to drive better experiences
Opening keynote for Hyland CEO Bill Priemer at CommunityLIVE 2023
Good morning! Welcome to CommunityLIVE! It’s great to see you all. Thank you so much for being here. I've been looking forward to this event for months. Mostly because I was excited to catch up with you all, but also because I don’t think I have a single Zoom call scheduled for this entire week!
This used to be Hyland’s one and only customer conference, but that’s no longer the case, as we now host events throughout the year and all around the world. But CommunityLIVE is our largest event of the year, and it’s got the biggest circle drawn around it on our calendars, because this is the pinnacle event for the Hyland community and users of all of our products. It‘s where we come together to learn, to share, and to inspire each other as we do this very important, often very challenging, but also very fulfilling work of continually modernizing and transforming our organizations.
We just heard Valtteri Bottas (BOW toss) talk about the importance of innovation to the Alfa Romeo F1 Team, which Hyland is proud to support. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Valterri a few times now, and sitting with him you feel his intense desire to constantly become better, at everything he does, whether that’s driving a car, or riding a bike (which he also does competitively) or paddling a kayak in his native Finland. And in all those cases, he understands that innovations in equipment, preparation and training are the difference between those who lead and win, and those who are bunched in with and undistinguished from the rest of the pack.
So innovation is our theme this week here in Las Vegas. The purpose of CommunityLIVE – and Hyland’s purpose, for that matter – is to help you innovate to provide better experiences and forge stronger connections with the people you serve – your customers, patients, citizens and students – while making your organizations more operationally sound, more agile and better prepared for growth.
Innovation is something that’s consistently desired, but inconsistently accomplished. Frankly, it’s easier to play it safe and wait for approaches to become proven before adopting them. But innovation is crucial because, if we truly want to provide better experiences — experiences that are differentiated, that are uncommonly good — we have to do something new. Something special. And for any kind of modern organization, in order to innovate, we have to leverage technology.
That’s where Hyland comes in. We help you put information to work in ways that empower your people to deliver their best. Our software comprehensively manages content, discreet data and processes – in order to provide the right information to the right people, when and where they need it. We make information more accessible and more actionable, so your professionals can provide a level of service that’s faster, more accurate and more proactive than what your competitors can provide.
Innovation has been Hyland’s driving force since we got our start in 1991 helping small banks compete with larger ones by being first to digitalize their content. We innovated when we launched our groundbreaking workflow capabilities in 1995. When we introduced our web capabilities in 1999. When we built the first iteration of the Hyland Cloud 19 years ago in 2004. Oftentimes innovation comes to us by way of acquisition, as when, in 2017, we acquired Perceptive – which brought us machine-learning-powered document capture and some of the industry’s first non-proprietary enterprise medical imaging tools. In recent years, we acquired Learning Machine and its blockchain-backed credentialing solutions, Another Monday and its robotic process automation tools, and Alfresco and Nuxeo, with their breakthrough, open-source-based content platforms that offer unprecedented flexibility and scalability. When we decided to pursue all these advancements, we did so to empower you with innovation.
And that innovation continues today with AI, which everybody is talking about, but which has been a significant focus for us for some time now. Brainware and our new intelligent document processing solutions leverage machine learning and proprietary algorithms to recognize, extract and validate key data. Our NilRead universal viewing platform gives healthcare providers intelligent visualization tools to streamline imaging workflows, including engines that identify and segment regions of interest for radiologists. Our Acuo vendor neutral archive provides the ability to accurately de-identify, prepare and package patients’ stored imaging records for analysis by AI programs used for both diagnosis and clinical research. Nuxeo Insights uses AI to classify and enrich any kind of content, including rich media, to make intelligent predictions.
And to say that we have big plans for AI would be an understatement. In the very near-term, AI will dramatically increase the capability and the value you derive from your Hyland platforms. Document identification and categorization will be a completely automated process. Natural language searching will become a common and trusted method for retrieving files. Your users will be able to ask questions, and the system will use generative AI to formulate answers based on your archived content. Your workflows will be increasingly automated, as the system learns which information and circumstances are required in order to approve, deny, route work to this queue, or route work to that queue.
As this vision is quickly becoming a reality, we are excited to refer to our emerging solutions as “intelligent content automation.” Transcending the limitations of traditional workflows, minimizing human touch, extracting deeper insights and making better decisions. That is the future that we are planning for you.
Throughout this morning’s session — and throughout this conference — we’ll explore these topics in greater depth. In just a few minutes, John Phelan, Hyland’s chief technology officer, and Leonard Kim, Hyland’s new chief product officer, will join me to discuss a few of the ways we’re innovating across our portfolio. We’ll discuss our renewed focus on user experience – as evidenced by the UI improvements we’ve introduced in OnBase Foundation 23.1, which includes an intuitive app builder. We’ll discuss the tangible progress we’re making with our next generation, cloud-native platform, Hyland Experience – and the role it will play in enabling intelligent content automation.
We’re so excited about the ways these and other innovations will empower you to pursue your organizational missions and serve your customers into the future. But CommunityLIVE isn’t just about the future. It’s about today – discovering tools you can use today to meet your needs today. Throughout this room, you all have your own powerful stories of how you’re working with Hyland and our partners to innovate. Later this hour, I’ll invite a trio of customers – Selvi Dayabaran from American Family Mutual Insurance, Brad Skiles from the University of Texas at Dallas and Casey Morse from Lippert Components – to join me on stage to share their inspiring stories of transformation.
Then, finally, to bring it all home, I’ll invite Chris McLaughlin, Hyland’s chief revenue officer, to discuss what all this talk of innovation means for you, your business and your goals.
Many of you here today have been working with us for many years, whether with Hyland directly or with a company that has become part of Hyland. Some of you are new to Hyland, having recently adopted a solution from us. To all of you, I want to express my sincere thanks. For your business. For your partnership. For your feedback. And for your trust. It’s a privilege for me and my Hyland colleagues to serve you.
And now, let’s go back to the racetrack. For Valtteri Bottas and his Alfa Romeo F1 Team, innovation isn’t just about improving their performance on the track, but also improving the way they engage with their partners and fans. At Hyland, we’re contributing to the team’s pursuit of innovation. As you’ll see, Sauber Motorsports is implementing a Nuxeo solution that relies on intelligent technology including facial recognition to manage the team’s digital assets. Just like for all of us, for Sauber it’s all about driving better experiences for its team members, partners and fans.
